The 57th edition of the International Bice Bugatti Segantini prize is awarded to Jose Rosabal
We are pleased to announce that this year’s prestigious International Award Bice Bugatti – Segantini in its 57th edition is honoring artist Jose Rosabal (Cuba, 1935) with the Career Award, for his commitment and dedication over the years to Concrete Art. This marks the first time the award is being given to a non-Italian artist.
The award consists of an acquisition for the Bice Bugatti Club’s permanent collection and the cultural heritage of Nova Milanese city, a solo exhibition and catalog of recent artworks and a medal from the President of the Italian Republic. The ceremony will take place June 11, 2016, and the exhibition will be held from June 11 – July 3 at Villa Brivio in the city of Nova Milanese.
The Bice Bugatti award was created in 1959 in honor of painter Giovanni Segantini and his wife Bice Bugatti. In 2008, with the inclusion of the Bice Bugatti Club, the award took a new and strong international direction, and since 2009 has turned its eyes to Latin America. Several of the art personalities linked to the award are Raffaele De Grada (art critic and professor of the Accademia di Belle Arti de Brera), Enotorio Mastrolonardo and Mario Monteverdi. Some of the recent honorees of the Bice Bugatti-Segantini Career Award are Arcangelo (2015), Concetto Pozzatti (2014), Italo Bressan (2013), Kudo Fumitaka (2012), and Franco Marroco (2011).
In this 57th edition of the Bice Bugatti-Segantini Career Award the committee of experts was integrated by previous honoree Prof. Franco Marrocco, painter and principal of the Accademia di Belle Arti de Brera; Prof. Martina Corgnati, art historian and critic, professor of the Accademia di Belle Arti de Brera and Prof. Alessandro Savelli, painter and principal of the Libera Accademia Viviani di Nova Milanese.
Jose Rosabal has infused his career as an abstract painter with a commitment to geometric abstraction. A member of the pioneering Cuban group 10 Pintores Concretos (1958-1961), he has lived in New York City since 1968. He also has worked as an independent textile designer. In recent years, his practices have taken on new verve, pointing toward a redefinition of Latin American Art.
